One of the best services that I could do for mankind on the Internet is to shout from the mountain top,

"Do not buy ready made, "cookie cutter" websites".

These usually only make the seller money.

A "cookie cutter" site is one that the builder creates so the title of the site can be easily changed to your domain name and the sites can be stamped out like using a "cookie cutter".
The site is sold under the pretense that all you have to do to make LOTS of money is buy the site and pay to have it hosted on the Internet.
The site has ready made links to products and services from which you are told will make a commission each time a person clicks a link. Usually the products and services are sold by the company that developed the website so they make most of the money if you do get a sale.

They keep telling you, "Just think how much money you will make by having a site like this on the Internet".
For those of you who have "cookie cutter" sites, it's time for true confessions.

When I first started on the Internet I did not know the magic word "traffic". I was naïve and thought that all you did was set up a website and the world beat a path to it to click on your offerings.
I read an ad that said,

"My little website made me $11,000 in a week"

I thought, "Wow, if that site made him that much money, just a small percentage of that will be fine with me".
Little did I know that the marketer who sold this "cookie cutter" site had a list of over 40,000 to which to promote the web site.

There were several testimonials in his sales letter about how people who had bought the site were raking in the money.
When I later researched the testimonials, I found that these were from other Internet marketers who had large lists and could drive traffic to their "cookie cutter" sites.

Beware of the fraternity of Internet marketers.

They scratch each other's backs.

I bought the site and guess what.
The only benefit I received from it was from some really good bonuses that were attached to the deal.
It was a "live and learn" experience. I have justified it to myself that the bonuses were worth the amount I paid, but they really weren't.

Since then I have seen many of these sites on the Net, and I really think it is a shame that people do this to other people.

The time and money spent trying to promote someone else's "cookie cutter" site

could be better spent creating your own site with your own personality.

So much of what is sold on the Internet should require the seller to tell "the rest of the story" to quote Paul Harvey.The untold part of the truth is really a lie.

My first impression was the site looks professional and clean, with an attractive look and feel. It is easy to read and understand. Joining the site was easy and painless--they do offer 2 upgrade options but they are not required to gain the benefits.

The Members Area is very well laid out and intuitive--I could figure out what to do after only a few minutes and was able to get up and running in less than 5 minutes. Inside the site, you create links and ads--the links you simply enter any URL links you use into the generator and it transforms them into "Inbox Traffic Machine" links.

You create ads for anything you want to promote using the Inbox Traffic Machine Ad Generator, which is very easy to use. You can create as many links and as many ads as you like. And they are organized in a logical way--links are displayed in the order you create them but also your 5 most recent links appear on the main page for quick reference. Also, since the link generator is the tool you'll use most, it is also right at the top of the main page when you login. Very smart!

After you've created at least 1 link and 1 ad you can start to generate traffic. Just use and promote the new Inbox Traffic Machine link instead of the original source link you had. I just read a blog post by Terry Dean where he
analyzed what did and didn't work for him in 2009.

I thought I'd cover the top 10 things that worked
for me in 2009 and a few that didn't.

1. Ockham's Razor promoted in February of 2009
ended up selling well.

The concept was a bit unusual to my list so it took
some promoting for it to take off.

What's weird is it didn't convert well to a few of
my JV partners lists. I don't understand that.

2. Deadlined offers

As always, offers to my email list with a deadline
work well.

What's unusual is that offers without a deadline have
declined in response. People seem to be more short-term
in their buying focus.

If you were on my Ateam call Thursday, you know how I'm
using the T-20 script to take this to another level.

3. Live chat

We did research on our live chat for customer support
that Tim does. There's an extremely high correlation
between live chats and sales.

I forget that exact number but it was 90% or something
like that. By the same token, offering live chat is a
substantial commitment and expense. Having someone like
Tim who is bright and conversant and excels at customer
support isn't cheap.

What I don't know is how many of the people we chat with
would have gone ahead and bought anyway.

4. SEO traffic

We get a lot of seo traffic from search engines to some
off my sites.

The conversions aren't that great. I believe I need to
find a way to get these visitors on our list WITHOUT
messing up the page and ruining our Google rankings!

I plan on trying a large fly in ad.

5. Webinars

I did several webinars like Overwhelm Cure and Produce
and Promote.

These did OK as far as sales but commensurate to the
effort they take on my part, I'd just as soon write
an ebook or create a product.

I always measure my time invested vs. dollar return.

6. Dashboards

Our Dashboards continue to sell well. I would have liked
to got out a Dashboard here at year end but we've been
working on revamping Ateam for 2010 and updating the
look of our sites.

7. Checkbox upsells

In the past I did checkbox upsells on our order forms
(where you check something off to add it to your order)
for 25% of the main product price.

I've increased this amount and the conversions are still
good.

I do better at this point on checkbox upsells than I do
post order upsells. But our post ordering upsell process
is a little clunky since we use Amember.

I'm planning on changing our back-end software this next
year.

8. Dollar trials

One thing I tried that worked well is $1 three-day trials.
However, we haven't rolled these out because it's a hassle
to try to track affiliate commissions on them with my
current affiliate software.

I may only do these dollar trials via affiliates who
promote a special page via another affiliate software.

I was initially concerned about the refund rate on these
trials. But our Dashboard product line is so content-rich
and vastly under-priced that refunds aren't an issue.
It helps when people love the products.

9. Go To Webinar for Ateam

While I don't know if I'll be doing many more paid webinars,
I DO like them for Ateam calls. I plan on rolling these
out in the Ateam 2010 launch. There will be a commensurate
price alteration for the increased value and service.

10. PPC (early results)

Joel Peterson helped me set up a content network campaign
using Keyword Rockstar. This is bringing in cheap clicks
for our Design Dashboard.

Our conversions aren't where I want them to be for this
traffic source, so I plan to invest some time in tweaking
them.

11. Systems documentation

We invested a lot of time documenting systems based on the
incredible inspiration of my friend Sam Carpenter from the

12. Staffing

I have a Filipina who is just a wonderful person and has
assisted us a lot in handling details.

Lisa is back and I couldn't be happier. Her talents were
missed very much. Along with that Danny, Sean and Santos
moved on to their next opportunity.

They're all neat, talented people and will go far in life.
My team now is 3 people and I'm content with that, although
I plan to add several more filipinas using the outsourceplan.com
system over the next year.

Now, a few things that didn't work:

1. My Warriors WSO

I ran only one WSO on Warriors Forum for a 1/2 price
special on Push Button Letters. This didn't work. And
I think the reason is that even at 1/2 off, it's still a
pretty high price compared to almost all the other WSO's.

This wasn't a big deal. I think I made a sale or two
which was still a positive roi on my whopping $20 ad fee.

WSO's are great. I plan to find some time to focus on a
few good ones.

2. Lack of communication with my resellers

Due to the same issue in #2, I haven't sent many emails to
my affiliates. We had a major problem with the vendor I
send my affiliate emails through. The fault was NOT theres.
It was an employee who didn't follow directions and caused
us a lot of grief!

In fairness, it probably wasn't the employees fault. Sam
Carpenter would say my system was at fault. And he'd probably
be right.

We're in the process of fixing this right now. If you're
a reseller, check your email box. You JUST got the first
promotion of a new breed from us.

3. 1 click upsells with Amember

Doesn't work. Well, there are a few solutions but really,
Amember just isn't very ideal for 1 click upsells.

Automateyourwebite.com or Infusion are much better choices.

The biggest thing for us is you can't do them with a normal
Paypal account and that sucks. You can use Paypal Pro which
is basically your own merchant account.

Merchant accounts are dicey. You have to watch chargebacks
like a hawk. Some people think that if they charge back
vs. refunding because they perceive it as easier, it won't
hurt the merchant. That's not true.

Affiliate Link Cloaking – Quick, Easy and Free

You know already that it’s probably a good idea to cloak your affiliate links. The more savvy surfers become about affiliate marketing and the links that represent your “paycheck,” the greater the likelihood that someone unsavory is going to hijack your affiliate ID and substitute it for their own. If they’re truly bloody minded, they could choose to bypass it altogether and simply cut you out of your hard earned commission.

So a variety of solutions have appeared over the years to make it harder for the bad guys to win. There are a number of free services that will cloak your link for you, like TinyURL, KlasLink, and others (some of which are paid services), which serve the dual purpose of hiding your ID and shortening a very long link into a tidy bit of more manageable code. While handy, surfers are becoming more familiar with them, and jump to the instant (and understandable) conclusion that clicking on one of these links is going to take them directly to a sales page. Unless their credit cards are already out of their wallets and poised for service, most people are going to choose to forego the sales pitch, and your persuasive copy will never have a chance to work its magic.

There are also several small software programs that will cloak your link – of variable usefulness and stability. Although you can download them for free, you’re left with the same problem of not being able to customize the code to de-emphasize the fact that the link is a sales tool.
The best solution is a bit of php code that will give you everything you want, with a single initial setup and no cost involved. You don’t even have to know anything about php coding. As long as you know how to upload a file, you’re gold. Here’s how to do it:
Begin by logging in to your host account. Create a directory/folder under your main domain name and call it “recommends” (or any variation you prefer; “likes,” “suggests,” etc.). Whatever you call this directory will be viewable by your visitors, so pick something pithy and upbeat.

Let’s say your domain name is http://marketersdream.com. In your FTP program or on your cpanel, whichever you’re using to access your site files, right click on marketersdream and select ‘create folder,’ then give it the name you’ve decided on. Let’s say you name it “recommends.”
Now you have a path that looks like this: http://marketersdream.com/recommends.
Let’s say you now want to promote a product called “winzip.” You create a directory under the recommends directory and call it “winzip.” Now you have a path like this: http://marketersdream.com/recommends/winzip.
Nearly done! Now all you need is an index.php file that redirects the user to your affiliate link. Here’s how you do that:
In Notepad, make a file and name it “index.php.” Here is all that should be in that file:
header(”Location: YOURCOMPLETEAFFILIATELINK”);
exit();
?>
Whatever the affiliate program you joined gave you as your unique affiliate link, just paste it over the capital letters above, making sure it includes the http:// part. If you wish to take the cloaking one step further, you can cloak your affiliate link with something like TinyURL, then paste THAT code over the capital letters. That way you ensure that your affiliate ID can’t be seen at any step during the redirection process.
So, in our example, you would paste your complete affiliate link for the “winzip” product over the capital letters in the code, save the file as index.php, then upload it into the http://marketersdream.com/recommends/winzip directory that you just created.

You’re finished. Now, whenever anyone clicks on the link http://marketersdream.com/recommends/winzip, they will be redirected to your affiliate page at Winzip. In future, with each new product you’re promoting, simply create a new folder under “recommends,” name it after the affiliate product, and upload the index.php file with the new affiliate link. Quick setup, easy solution, no cost. Just like it says on the box!

How to never lose money learning Internet marketing

This is a great story:

This formerly homeless woman spent hours at the coffee
shop sending out resumes. So she started blogging about
her adventures in a blog called...

"The Girl's Guide to Homelessness."

She blogged her way OFF living on the Wallmart parking
lot.

Now she's writing a column on fashion for Elle magazine.

This story should inspire MANY people.

I mean, if a homeless woman living on the Wallmart parking
lot can get off the streets by blogging, then, you know,
maybe it REALLY isn't hopeless for you!

Here's the difference between this lady and so many
people:

She took a LOT of action.

Finding herself in a difficult circumstance, she spent
hours and hours at a coffee shop with wi-fi sending out
resumes.

Then she started blogging about her job interviews.

She took action.

And that's the difference.

She didn't have an ebook on how to get off the parking lot
of Wallmart by blogging.

She didn't have a mindmap on how to get a job at Elle
magazine writing fasion.

She didn't even own a computer.

Now, learning is totally awesome. And I believe in giving
yourself every shortcut you can. But at the end of the
day, you gotta get it going -- whether you know what
you're doing or not.

Normally, I publish very specific tips, secrets, steps and
how to's here.

But I see a small number of people in this business who
have a powerless mindset. They think "gurus" are doing it
to them and it's all the teacher's fault.

They think it's someone else's fault that they aren't
driving a Ferrari by now.

They think that it's "too hard" to blog, create products
or do video.

Basically, they feel they're powerless to create results
in their life and their lack of results are all someone
else's fault.

They feel it's someone else's fault they don't have a
product to sell yet.

Yeah right.

I mean, come on now, the lady was homeless. Look at what
SHE did!

Some people I read about NEED to get a job.

I read where people are going into DEBT trying to learn
Internet marketing.

They have it 360 degrees backwards.

You should be getting MORE money in the door than goes out
the door pretty much from month one.

You can't CREATE your own product and start selling it too
soon.

Even if it's 6 videos on a web page.

Let me give you a MODEL for how to do this:

Look at that. Is there ANY reason you can't create such a
simple product YOURSELF?

Look at the sales letter! There's not a lot to it. But
it's good. It has a clear USP, a good headline, and proof
in the form of testimonials.

The second one has FOUR videos.

LOOK at that site.

Are you telling me there's something about you that is so
jacked up YOU can't create FOUR VIDEOS and a very simple
sales letter like that with NO graphics?

Please! Jason was freaking painting homes for $10 an hour
when he started in this business. He'd never written copy
nor created a video or product in his life.

By the way, that second link has brought in quite a bit of
change. I dare say more than a lot of people make in a
year, if you take into account the upsell.

Here's my point:

A few people told me they didn't have the $499 my new
training will cost on Tuesday.

Then get busy and create 4 videos and a sales letter like
you see above.

Buy a banner on a forum and stick the link to your sales
letter in a sig line and post on some forums every day.

It's not like getting $500 in the door is a massive
undertaking.

Your Internet marketing education can and should be BETTER
than self funding.

Going into debt is ridiculous. If you can't pay your
bills, got get a job and some financial stability.

Mike Filsaime was sales manager for the nation's largest
Toyota dealership. And he drove 2 hours to work and 2
hours home EVERY day.

And he STILL put in an hour or two every day to start his
IM business.

I'm NOT saying it's easy.

I'm saying it CAN be done and has been done.

There ARE no excuses for not having and selling your own
products online.

Now, I'm all for selling affiliate products. And I realize
you see screen caps every day from people who throw out
massive numbers saying they do it by selling affiliate
products alone.

And I believe they are telling the truth....sort of.

I DOUBT they're telling you what it REALLY takes for them
to have those sales.

But let's say they are.

I'm STILL going to contend the BEST way to build your list
is by selling your own product. And it's the best way to
sell affiliate products.

To start with, selling affiliate products IS a good way to
get started. But really, it shouldn't be but a few months
before you have at least one product of your own.

Now, there are others out there saying you don't need to
build a list.

Listen to them if you want. But first ask yourself some
questions:

1. Has their method been working since 1998 and before?

2. Will their method be working 1 year from now?

3. What happens when a lot of people start using their
method?

Of course, they're only selling it to 500 people. But
listen, word travels fast in this business.

You can listen to whoever you want to listen to and follow
whatever model you want. That's your choice.

Are the web 2.0 methods evergreen?

I like some of them. But will Twitter and Facebook BE here
5 years from now? I think web 2.0 is cool stuff and IS
part of a sound marketing arsenal.

Use them but don't bet the farm on them.

A lot of people want GIMMICKS instead of basic, sound,
"old school" marketing.

1. You find your target buyers

2. Put together an attractive report or video they WANT
and will subscribe to get.

3. Send follow up emails

4. Get your own product as soon as you can

5. Start using multi-media to sell and promote

Blog posts, video, podcast audio, even postcards and
direct mail. Not to mention webinars and teleseminars.

You can specialize in one of these or slowly roll out the
full arsenal.

Creating audio and video is EASY and fun now.

It used to be difficult. But it's stupid easy now, once
you know the tricks.

7 Ways To Kick Your Sales & Profits Up A Notch -- Starting
This Week

Kick up your sales a notch -- starting this week.

Yesterday, I had an awesome phone call with my pal Daegan Smith.
Daegan's interview is in Promo Dashboard if you have that
product.

Daegan has a background in wrestling. And we were comparing your
progress in Internet marketing to the learning the basics of
wrestling.

The very first basic you learn in wrestling is called the
"one leg take down." And you don't go on to learn other
more advanced methods until you learn it.

I look at this as a tree.

And every tree has "roots." If the tree doesn't have deep
roots, what happens when a storm comes along?

Well, we're in a bit of a storm right now in the business
world. There's no denying that the U.S. and a few other
countries are experiencing a pullback in spending, consumer
confidence, credit and other things.

Now, if you have "deep roots," then you're built to survive
and thrive in storms.

But what if you don't have deep roots?

Sam Carpenter from "Work The System" fame says:

"Look hard at the survivors around you - the folks who were in
business three years ago and who are still in business today.
You'll notice a commonality: These people fixate on perfecting
systems that are within their grasps, while they detach
themselves from the details of the things they can't affect.
In positioning themselves in this way, they overcome personal
malaise by becoming tremendously efficient, while they defeat
general malaise by ignoring it."

Last week at the Ryan Deiss/Perry Belcher seminar in Austin
(a terrific event by the way), I talked to long time marketer
and customer Bill Harrison. Bill has a huge, thriving business
now.

And he's doing better now than ever before. Why? Because
he ADDED new systems to counteract the effects of the
downturn.

Since I AM the King of Step-By-Step Internet marketing, I'm
gonna lay out a system for you to kick things up a notch,
whether you're getting started or you're an established
pro.

1. Add new traffic systems

Daegan mentioned to me that he bought an excellent ebook the
other day with a way of getting traffic from MSN, an under-
exploited traffic source.

The KEY is to turn your new traffic source into a SYSTEM,
so you can outsource it.

If you have to do the work yourself, it'll NEVER get done!

Or maybe you don't aggressively do article marketing. My long
time affiliate Sean Mize has an outstanding system for
article marketing.

All you have to do is execute by creating the system or buying
a system from someone who has already put it together then
outsource it.

a. Find one new source of traffic by someone who has created
a system for it.

You do NOT want to recreate the learning curve yourself. If
you don't already have an affiliate program, I highly recommend
you start there. http://www.affiliatedashboard.com is a total
system.

b. Get the basics in place

If there's software to buy or install, get that done by someone.
Get the basics up and running.

c. Create your written or video system that you can outsource

d. Find someone to operate the details of the system and
sub-systems.

2. Create an offer for the cpa networks

This past weekend, I saw Jim Lillig (an old time friend) at
the Ryan Deiss/Perry Belcher event. Jim is CEO of offerati.com
which is a cpa network.

Big dog Casey owns the majority of offerati.

Mike Filsaime has started a CPA network.

Mike Hill has a product on the CPA Tsunami. Mike goes way back
to the Boulder seminars Mizel, Declan and I did.

This is an ADVANCED strategy and, in my opinion, not for
beginners. But it CAN really ramp up your traffic.

If you do this, you need to spend 3-6 months really focusing
on it. It's a major initiative. Your visitor value is
everything and that means you need upsells and downsells that
work great.

If Clickbank was college then CPA networks are the graduate
program. An offer on there that succeeds can bring in 1,500
subscribers a day -- and more.

I know one marketer who rumor says gets 100,000 subscribers
a MONTH!

3. Tweak your squeeze page

I've seen actual stats on squeeze pages that convert 60% to
70% of raw, cold traffic into subscribers. It IS possible
by doing lots of split testing using Google Website
Optimizer or whatever your tool of choice is.

a. Find a variety of squeeze page designs and ideas
b. Get the varieties designed for your lead generator
c. Put into Google Website Optimizer
d. Keep split testing
e. Work through all the sub-systems and optimize them.

e.1 Test different thank you for subscribing pages to see
which works best.
e.2 Test an offer on the thank you page vs. a straight pitch
to get people to confirm their subscription
e.3 Test single vs. double confirmation. This makes a huge
difference.
3.4 Test a custom subject line on your confirmation email
3.5 Test the page people go to AFTER they confirm their
email address.

4. Work your uspells and downsells

Since getting your email delivered is a bit dicey, in today's
market you have to push the pedal on the upsells and downsells.
You don't have a choice.

If you don't understand upsells and downsells, refer to the
articles on my blog.

a. Test starting high and going down in price
b. Expand the $ amount of one offer to test the upper limits
c. Compare your upsells and downsells to the competition.
d. A high visitor value is essential for your affiliate program

Again, if you don't understand the concept of visitor value, you
need to log in some time on marlonsnews.com reading back ezine
issues.

5. Hit your autoresponders hard

a. Put extra effort into those first few emails
b. Test your email sequence until it's a sales machine
c. Subscribe to many emails and test your deliverability

c.1 Subscribe to a gmail, hotmail, yahoo, aol, mail.com and
so forth.
c.2 If your emails are getting received, then search Google
for "whitelisting procedures."

6. Be more aggressive in your Ockham's Razor procedures

Take that formula in Ockham's Razor and work the living
daylights out of it.

I've been spending all my time tweaking our systems. But
I'm ramping up into Ockham's Razor mode!

I can't wait.

7. Look for your Red Factor edges

Who is underserved? Who is overserved? Who is a non-
consumer? Where is the opportunity?

What is your advantage? Are you a Stealth Marketer?
Are you in a drag race? Are you running a "both and" play?
Are you going "high low?"

What's your marketing play?

It's CRAZY to do marketing without knowing the play you're
running. That's random marketing and a really bad idea.

You go in knowing your advantage upfront.
